I learnt a new skill today
Went JB with Garry and gang today. His bridal studio is in Johor. It's called Venus. He say he chosed this studio instead of 1 in Singapore cos their photo shoot is the best he has seen. I looked at some of their sample, it is indeed quite nice. Anyway, the main reason we are there is to collect the bridal car decorations, the photo albums, his jackets and the gowns.
Before going to Venus, we went to hotel Crystal Crown, which is right opposite for a nice Japanese lunch. The food there is quite nice, but then I am not a Japan food connoisseur though. Maybe you can go there and try, then tell me. There are more than 10 of us, and it cost us only RM$200+. And it's in a nice hotel setting. We tried quite a number of items, I liked most of them. The potato croquet is the best I've eaten, though that won't mean much. :P I ordered the Teppan Beef Set. It's very nice too. We ordered so much that all of us were growling after the lunch.
After collecting the items from Venus, we took a private taxi to Garry's place. That driver sure has alot to say. If you think that some political taxi drivers in Singapore are talkative, you've not taken this private taxi that we did. It's good that we took this taxi. We shorten the journey by at least 1 hr cos he took a shortcut thru the custom. He gave us his name card while in the causeway and I found that to book his car to Johor Senai Airport, it's only S$60. And he'll go to each passenger's house to pick him/her up. So if 4 person share, it's only anout $15 each. Quite convenient if you have alotta luggage.
The bridal car arrives shortly after we reach Garry's place. Funny. I thought he said he can only come at 12mn tonite. That's why we went to collect all the ribbons and stuff to tie ourselves. Anyway, he called and say he can come earlier, so we get to sleep better tonite.

This is what the front looks like. There are supposed to be 2 bears in front of the bouquet, but we are tie-ing it just before we set off tomorrow.

And this is the rear. It's mostly done by me. Not very good hor? But it's nice enough I think.
All of us, including the driver had no experience with tie-ing the stuff at all. And we were racking our brains to do it properly. I think the result don't look too bad. Who want me to help them tie next time, I think I'll do better. :P

Happy Birthday Muchuan

I don't know if you pp have heard of Muchuan, 木船. It's a bubble tea place with Live bands performing. Sort of like a pub except that they serve bubble tea instead of alcohol and that they sing mostly mandarin songs. And they sing only until 11pm. We call it 民歌餐厅. I don't know the english term for it.
Muchuan has been entertaining us chinese songs lovers for the past 12 years. I wuold guess that they were following on the success of the Taiwan Muchuan. For a period they should be doing quite well, as I see alotta other 民歌餐厅 popping up, and Muchuan doubled their shop size. Unfortunately, like all business bubbles, most of these 民歌餐厅 closed down after a couple of years. Taiwan Muchuan also ceased to exists few years back. Competition from the pubs, KTV and each other is taking a heavy toll from them I guess. But the Singapore Muchuan is still standing proudly.
I first visited Muchuan in 1996. Started going regularly about 3 years ago. I've always liked listening to chinese songs, especially those of the 1980s era. Some friends tell me that they prefer to use the money in KTv instead where they get to sing and not listen to some strangers sing. Well, I can't sing as well as those singers, even if they are only amatuers. And there are so many people flocking to pubs to listen to Live bands sings english songs, I happen to prefer a mandarin touch.
I always go Muchuan on Friday evenings. It used to be Sunday evenings, then Thursdays, and then now it's Friday. Cos of my favourite band of cause! They are the band with the highest amount chinese oldies in their repetoire. They've consists of 2 person mainly. Weiyang is the best guitarist in Muchan and Michael has a mouth that is full of cock. I don't mean it in a gay sense of cuase.
They had been with Muchuan since the beginning. These 12 years must have been difficult for them, alot of their peers have since quit the scene. Alot of the singers have come and go, but they are still here. Muchuan is their sanctuary from work they say and they treasure the 3 hours that they spent in Muchuan every week. I hope they have alot more of 12 yrs to come!
In this 12 year anniversary, instead of celebrating with fan fare, they are moving. They used to be at the 1st floor of Apollo Center. It can be found in the map above. They are moving to the Safra building at Carpenter Street. It can be found in the map above as well. I feel abit sad. That old place is so full of memories.
Edit: I forgot to add. The cover charges for the new Muchuan is now only $6 for weekdays and $9 for weekends!!

Harry Porter And The Goblet Of Fire

I've been watching Harry Porter since the 1st espisode. This is the forth. I've read the books too, 6 of them. 7th should be the last book I think.
The 1st espisode was pretty nice, though long. The 2nd espisode I thought they've got not enough time to finish the story such that alotta things were not explained clearly enough. The 3rd book do away with alotta parts altogether such that most things that appeared in the movie is explained enough, but missing out on incidents that can develope the character further.
The forth espisode is similar, but I thought it's quite good nonetheless. They only have so much time to tell the story. To fully explain everything in the book, they'll have to make it into a mini series.
The higglights of the book is the Wuidditch World Cup final and the Tri-wizard Tornament. I was pretty disappointed when they did not show the game at all, but I guess it's ok. They have shown enough of the Quidditch in espisode 1. They also skipped how the other 3 students solve the 1st round of getting around the dragons. No time I guess.
I forgot, but Weiling was telling me she imagined Mad Eye Moody should be a thin under-nourished man, but in the movie he's quite plump. Then Dumbledore was more lifely then in the previous espisodes, almost can say he looked younger. Fleur Delacour is pretty and charming. Even Cho Chang is just how I would imagined her to be. Neville Longbottom also looks fitting to me.
All in all, I enjoyed the movie. I think I'll have to re-read the books again to catch up on the differences between the movie and the book.

New earpiece

Looking at the bottom earpiece, you can see he cable is bent sharply. It's where it's crushed by my chair.
So I went hunting for a new ear piece. I've heard that the earpiece for WM800 is designed such that I can plug in any earphones/haedphones, and since it's very much the same phone as mine, I decided to get that earpiece. It's pretty expensive. cost $58 where the T750i earpiece cost only $28. More than double.
This earpiece is quite neat. I don't know if it's because I never notice it before, when I listen to my mp3, I notice the stereo effect that I never noticed when I use the T750i earphones. But 1 thing for sure is that the bass is much better. However, when the volume is too high, the bass tend to break. Maybe I shld get a good headphone and plug it in. But I am quite happy with it so far.
The shop tells me that I can change the cover to that of the WM800 and upgrade the software to WM800 too. Upgrading of software is abt $35, but he adviced me against it saying it's not much difference. I'll have to get my hans on 1 and try. He said changing the cover will be better, and there's a new blue cover coming up tat is quite cool. But I am nto too interested in that, so I did not ask for the price.
Shanghai food

There's this restaurant along Neil Road selling Shanghai food. The name is Qun Zhong (群众), or in direct translation, crowd.
Let's look at the map to have an idea of it's location. This is rough sketch by me, looks hideous but bo pian, I dun dare use Streedirectory.com's pic...
This restaurant sells Shanghai food, though the bulk of it's customers are Japanese, and it gets pretty crowded during dinner, and there's almost always a crowd outside the restaurant waiting for their seats. And sometimes, you will have to share table with other patrons.
I went there with Shadow last night. We reached it just before the dinner crowd came and got our seat easily enough. We ordered the usual stuff, meat sauce noodles (扎酱面), dumplings (锅贴), Xiao Long Bao (小龙包) and sour hot soup (酸辣汤). The noodles is not bad, not ultra fantastic, but nice enough. I don't really like to drink sweet and sour soup, Shadow's the 1 who wanted it. She said it's not hot (in the chilli sense) enough. I had a taste, really not hot. I like the dumplings, think it's quite nice. Xiao Long Bao is not bad, compared to what I had in Sg, but then, I have not tried alotta XLB in Sg. I heard DTF is quite gd, but I never been there. Qun Zhong's XLB is certainly nowhere near to what I had in Shanghai, but it's good enough for now.
By now the crowd is starting to gather outside the restaurant, but we decide to order a couple of more dishes. Desserts. We ordered a bowl of tang yuan (汤圆) and red bean paste pancake (豆沙锅饼). The pancake is my favourite. Taste real nice and crispy. Tang yaun is not bad as well. Ir's served in osmanthus soup, fragrance and nice.
This meal cost us $36.10.
The hassles of getting married
Quite a number of my frens have gotten married. Talking to them made me realise that most of guys would rather to do without the ceremonies and dinners. If they could have the choiec, they would prefer to just ROM and get a house and jus live there with the wife with minimum fanfare. But the expectations of their parents and wife and in laws are demands that they could not run away from. They always tells me that the whole process of getting married is such a hassle that all men would rather not do.
Maybe I am the odd 1 out. Maybe it's just cos I have never done it and therefore am in a illusion of the grandiose of weddings, but I am of the opinion that if I am getting married to the woman that I love absolutely, I would love to have a big party about it. Invite the whole world to witness and share in the joy of it.
Of cos, there's more to wedding than the dinner. The preparation before it is probably a killer for alotta guys. There will be alotta demands from the soon-to-be in laws. Alotta instructions from the parents. House renovation to take care of. Guest list to be compiled. Pictures to be taken. Etc, etc. I probably will have missed out on quite a number of stuff. If the tasks to be performed is due to tradditions, I think I will gladly do it. It's these kind of memories that you will look back with fondness in the future.
I am not really in favour of getting a diamond ring though. I feel it is over rated. In all the traditions of the world, none of the wedding rites involved a diamond ring. The diamond ring is quite a recent discovery, and yet it managed to wedge itself into the heart of every wedding. Brilliant marketing. I guess this is not my choice though. It's too deeply ingrained into all modern womens' mind that a diamond ring, a big 1, is the most important part of the wedding.
The other thing I am not in favour of is the photo shots. I am of the opinion that photos are to capture memories. Getting a good photographer for the wedding ceremony, ROM ceremony, wedding dinner is a must. But going to studios to take pictures in various costumes, bring the photographers to various places to pose for shots, I think is meaningless. What memories is there to capture? After spending a few thousand dollars for a photo album, which is onli used for display at the reception at the dinner.
Anyway, all these things I onli say say only. Next time when I get married, if I managed to get married, the demands of the missus might just change my opinions...
That and financial constraints.

Sunny's wedding
Congrats Sunny and Weiling!!
Sunny and Weiling got married on last Saturday. I was not involved in the morning ceremony, but I went for the church ceremony in the afternoon at 3pm, which I went too late and missed it. Out of 6 of us who went, only 2 were in time for the ceremony...
So sorry. :P
We left about 5pm, and since dinner is not starting until 7pm, Peh went home sleep, Kelvin went home for a change of clothes, Dentist go home too while Me and LH go play pool.
"Yeee!"
After that we went back to our dinner for awhile...
A different kind of wedding dinner, but equally enjoyable. All the best to you Sunny and Weiling. May the 2 of you enjoy lotsa enjoyable days and nites together till the end of time.
It's ok to blog abt National Service
OK to blog about National Service. Certain things are still forbidden, like training plans, strategies, pictures of weapons and vehicles, and pictures of injured personnels. Pictures of injured personnels is not allowed because you don't want the pictures to go public before the serviceman's family is informed of his injuries. Events that are currently under investigations are also forbidden. If you are not sure if something is deemed too sensitive to be blogged about, you can contact the Army Information Centre (AIC) people for advice.
I'll be looking thru my Wallabye 2005 articles and see if there's any thing inside that should be removed, and then I'll put them up again.

Idiotic Sunday Times
Later Miyagi advised me to remove them anyway, which I did. He also stopped the Singapore Army Stories blog. If you go there now, you only see this paragraph,
Dear readers and contributors of 'Days Were The Those', I am sorry I have had to take down the contents of this blog till I am given permission to put them back up again. Readers and contributors are reminded not to publish military-related information and photographs without first having clearance to do so. Warm regards, Benjamin Lee a.k.a. Mr Miyagi
Then I received an email from Jeremy Au Yong. He said that he is working on a story about servicemen blogging about their experiences and he noticed that I have removed my articles on it. He wanted to know if mindef put pressure on me to do so. He wanted to know what I think about blogging while in NS and whether mindef should or should not control this avenue.
I have nothing against Mindef trying to control what pp wrote abt what happens in the army. We could have let out some important secret. I had tried not to write on things that may be too sensitive. However, in my article in Singapore Army Stories, I wrote about an accident that happend in Australia. Nobody was injured in the accident, and my intention is to tell people about the dangers that we faced and that we should be careful and alert when handling the equipments. Apparently, this accident is still under investigation and is deemed too sensitive to be made public, and I was glad that it's taken down.
I would have accepted the interview by Mr Au Yong, except that I've read too many stories of how interviewers have their statements quoted out of context that the meaning came out very different. I would not want to get into trouble for doing that. I did not answer Mr Au Yong. He go and write about me anyway for today's Sunday times. Worse, he mentioned that I wrote about the accident. Didn't he have seen the message by Miyagi when he visit the site? I should have replied him and asked him not to mention me at all, though I am not sure if he would have heeded it.
This is not a heavily visited blog, but I would like to tell everyone that I am unhappy about been mentioned in Mr Au Yong's article.
I looked at my visitors stats just now. There were a few people who have searched for me via google and came here. They will be disappointed in not finding the article mentioned in the Sunday Times. I have been informed by the relevant authorities that,
Army Information Management group (AMC) wants to portray Army as an open minded organisation, so it expects people to be responsible in self censoring and ensure that what is published or discussed do not infringe on operation security, and the sensitivity of any individual.
List of operation security can be but not limited to the following: mission plan, system, equipment, weapons that are classied in nature.
For sensitivities issues, it can include discussion of cases where it is still
undergoing investigation, publishing of injured personnel before the direct
family is informed, and etc.
I am still trying to clarify some doubts with them. When they are clarified, then I will republish my articles, with the relevant changes if necessary. I am pretty sure the accident mentioned in the Sunday Times will not be there though.

Kind bus captain
As I tap my ezlink card to the machine on the bus, I realise that there's no value inside. So I decide to alight immediately and proceed to the nearest mrt station that is 10 min walk away to top up my card.
The captain called me as I was alighting and tell me I can just board the bus anyway, which I declined. I needed to top up the card anyway. He then suggested that I take his bus to the next station which is 3 stops away. The station is right next to the bus stop, which means a much shorter distance to walk.
I gladly accepted.
Happy birthday Gerald!

Wallabye 2005: Main body arrived

Continued from Takig over equipment and stores.
The main body had finally arrived. The tank platoon finally had their full strength. The first move out is for familiarization driving for the drivers. It's just a short drive out of camp. After all, the drivers had not driven a tank for some time, have to let them get used to driving the tank again.
There was an interesting banter in the canteen at 1 of the nights. We were talking about fucking more than once in a day and the great highly esteemed PS revealed that he can on do it once. He's the source of ridicule from us that night. And guess what?
He cried
Well, he claimed that sand got into his eye.
The 3rd banner was put up after we went for our last exercise before Atec. I thought it's quite well written.
There is 1 more motivational banner. My favorite, but I forgot to take a picture of it!! Argh!. It goes like this "All training no matter how successful, is not completed until every soldier is home safely". Is it nice? But I thought it would be better if it's like this, "All training no matter how well executed is not a success unless all soldiers are home safely".
